Welcome

Through Esther’s Voice, Good Shepherd Youth and Family Service, Jesuit Social Services and MacKillop Family Services are collaborating to initiate high quality research and advocacy on issues of agreed mutual importance. Benefits of the Esther’s Voice collaboration include a wider base for research and a greater strength in advocating for changes arising from this research.

We welcome your feedback about this site and our current projects. You are most welcome to join our (free) mailing list to receive updates on the work of Esther’s Voice.

Our 'Education and Disadvantage' Digital Storytelling Project is now in its pilot phase and ready to engage a wider group of disadvantaged young people to tell their stories about their experience of Australia's education system. Tony Vinson's newly published Moving from the Edge gathers inspiring stories of individuals and families who have made their way through a web of disadvantage and come to live satisfying and productive lives. Read 'Brian's Story' from Moving from the Edge at Eureka Street.

John Honner, Esther's Voice writer-in-virtual-residence, won the Australasian Catholic Press Association 2010 award for best social justice coverage for his story on the apology to the forgotten generation (see Cathnews). The winning story can be read at Eureka Street. This award follows John's 2009 silver award for excellence from the Australasian Religious Press Association for best story on social justice.

The Esther’s Voice forum on Spirituality and Human Services was held on Tuesday 8 December 2009 at the Treacy Centre in Parkville. The forum provided an opportunity for leaders from Good Shepherd, Jesuit Social Services and MacKillop Family Services, along with some critical friends, to explore the place of Catholic community service organisations in the secular state. Dr John Honner and Associate Professor Beth Crisp provided background papers, and Peter Collins facilitated the discussion. The background papers can be accessed here, and a report on the discussion will be available soon.
